EARLY MEDIEVAL TRADE BETWEEN DEVON AND THE MEDITERRANEAN

A common perception of Britain following the withdrawal of Roman rule is that of a region plunged into a ‘dark age’ cut off from the rest of Europe. In fact, the west coast of Britain belonged to a substantial trade network that stretched along the whole of western Europe, linking Devon and Cornwall with the Mediterranean.


Archaeology student and Totnes Heritage Trust trustee Alexander Ringsmith delivers a lecture on this little-known period, highlighting its relevance to the local area.
